Common Q&A

Is acupuncture painful?

Most patients do not report feeling pain upon insertion of the needles. Acupuncture needles are very fine, sterile and disposable. These tiny needles are gently inserted at specific points along the meridians on the body. Once inserted, people describe experiencing a feeling of warmth, tingling, heaviness or energy flow around the needle and along the meridians. At the end of the treatment, most people experience a deep state of relaxation and well-being.

What is community acupuncture?

Most acupuncturists treat patients in individual cubicles. This is not the tradition in Asia, where acupuncture usually occurs in a community setting. In our clinic we use recliners and tables in an open quiet soothing space. Treating patients in a community setting has many benefits: itʼs easy for friends and family members to come in treatments together and many patients find it comforting and prefer the collective energy of a group environment, which can make acupuncture treatments more powerful. We have our patients pay on a sliding scale which can allow acupuncture to be made available to a wide range of people of any economic background. We want to make it possible for you to receive acupuncture regularly and long enough to get better and stay better. We want to give you the tools to take care of your own health so that you will not need to rely on corporations like big insurance or big pharmaceuticals for costly, high-tech interventions.

What can I expect from an acupuncture treatment?

An initial acupuncture treatment takes a little bit of extra time during which time we will review the patientʼs medical history, discuss the current health concern and any previous diagnosis(if the person has one) with the patient, perform various diagnostic examinations and provide a treatment with acupuncture by inserting needles along acupuncture meridians while the patients lays on a massage table or a recliner in a comfortable setting. Other treatment modalities may be applied in conjunction with the needles to enhance the treatment effect. Follow up appointments take 30-45 minutes.
I recommend the patient wear loose fitting clothes that slides above the elbows and knees for appointments.

How many treatments will I need?

A number of variables have to be taken into account in order to determine how many treatments a person will need. A personʼs response to the acupuncture treatments, duration of the condition and severity of the condition are a few of these variables. However, changes should be observed and felt by a person after only a couple of treatments.

How does acupuncture treat pain?

Acupuncture has been scientifically proven to release pain relieving endorphins. Acupuncture breaks the spasm cycle which muscles can get caught in, causing unrelenting pain and tightness. Acupuncture can speed up the healing time of an injury by increasing circulation which in turn provides needed nutrients to nerves, muscles and bones to begin healing.

What are Chinese herbal formulas?

Chinese herbal formulas are potent combinations of herbs designed to treat specific conditions. Herbs are combined to form harmonizing formulas with specific functions. The powder formulas may be modified based on the patientʼs constitution and health condition. The herbs come in the form of powder or capsules.

Is acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine safe?

Yes, very safe when performed by a licensed and board certified practitioner, like all of our experienced practitioners at WCA.  Acupuncture is a non-invasive, safe form of medicine that is based on over 3000 years of experience and knowledge of the human body. Herbal formulas are potent and when properly prescribed have no negative side effects.

Do you take insurance?

Since we have a sliding scale fee model, we cannot bill insurance as per their rules. If you have insurance that covers acupuncture, weʼll be happy to give you a payment receipt, and you can submit it for reimbursement from your insurance carrier.
